Housemark’s Housing Data and Analytics Summit on the 6 October will feature a range of in and out of sector data experts speaking on a variety of topics and we’ll be profiling some of our speakers over the coming weeks to whet your appetite!

First up is world-renowned British mathematician and data science entrepreneur, Clive Humby OBE – famed for coining the phrase ‘Data is the new oil’ as well as being one of the driving forces behind Tesco’s Clubcard and ACORN, the geodemographic segmentation tool.

Get to know Clive Humby OBE

Clive is known as one of the world’s pioneers in customer data science and was awarded an OBE for services to Data and UK Business in the 2019 Birthday Honours. He revolutionised the use of transaction data and, with Edwina Dunn, founded the company dunnhumby which has given us My Kroger Plus and Tesco’s Clubcard – the first mass customisation loyalty programme in the world. The company applies science and technology to customer data, to help businesses understand consumer trends and behaviours.

He now runs data-science consultancy Starcount, working in multiple markets with clients such as Marks & Spencer, Holland & Barrett and Jaguar Land Rover to create highly profitable and effective business strategies revolving around high-quality customer service.

Clive has an Honorary Doctorate from Kingston University for his contribution to Data Science after creating the first geodemographic data system, ACORN, in the 1980s. Acorn is used to understand consumer lifestyles, behaviours and attitudes, and to analyse customers, identify profitable prospects, evaluate local markets and focus on the specific needs of each catchment area and neighbourhood. It is widely used across retail, utility and public sectors.

In 2006, he coined the famous phrase “data is the new oil”, suggesting that data is powering the current revolution and the importance of data as a commodity. Since then, his phrase has been cited in numerous publications and become a common term of phrase within the data space.

Clive also holds honorary doctorates in engineering from the University of Sheffield, and in Business Administration from Kingston University London. He is an Honorary Companion of the Operational Research Society, holds Honorary Fellowships of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing and the Market Research Society, of which he is also Patron.

We’re really excited Clive will be joining us for an exclusive, not to be missed presentation about the importance of data-driven customer insight and engagement!
